Alcohol, Other Drugs and HIV
Are there risks of getting HIV if I drink or use drugs?
When you are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, you are:
- More likely to have casual sex
- Less likely to use condoms
- Less likely to know your partners sexual history
- More likely to regret decision to have sex
- Less likely to use condoms correctly
- More likely to be sexually exploited (date or acquaintance rape)
Drunk or stoned sex is dangerous sex. Being high or drunk can lead to unsafe sex or sharing needles and this can lead to getting HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections, or to unplanned pregnancies. Drugs and alcohol are not a good excuse for a bad decision.
Protect Yourself And Your Partner... PLAN AHEAD
- If you are planning to party, always bring condoms.
- If you are having the party, make condoms available. Let everyone know where they are so they can help themselves.
- If injection drugs may be around, have some extra needles so nobody has to share.
- Free condoms and new injection supplies are available from AIDS Thunder bay
